Before You Lead the Team, Lead Yourself

November 10, 20252 min read

A leader said to me recently:

“I’m doing everything I can, keeping projects moving, checking in with people, but something still feels off in the team. I don’t know what I’m missing.”

If you’ve ever felt this, you’re not alone.

It is one of the most common and frustrating experiences in leadership today. You are busy, committed, and showing up. And yet the team still feels stuck.

The Hard Truth

Teams do not just respond to what we do.
They respond to who we are when we do it.

The Hidden Factor Most Leaders Overlook

We often define leadership through action. Setting direction. Assigning work. Managing performance.

These things matter, but on their own they rarely create a thriving team.

What really makes the difference?

The energy you bring into the room.
How you handle stress and how it shows up around others.
The tone you set in everyday conversations.

Most team challenges are not just about workload or processes. They are about presence, clarity, and connection.

And that starts with you...

The Inner Work That Changes Everything

We have seen it time and again.

A leader pauses and asks, “What is it like to be led by me?” and truly listens.
A leader admits they are stretched and invites the team to co create solutions.
A leader notices their default reactions and learns to pause before responding.

These are not dramatic changes, but they are powerful.

Small inner shifts create outward ripple effects. Teams feel safer. Trust grows. Energy returns.

You do not need to lead louder, harder, or faster.

You need to lead more intentionally from a grounded and thoughtful place.

A Simple Framework to Start: LEAD

If you are wondering where to begin, try this.

Listen:
To others and to yourself. Pay attention to what is said and what is left unsaid.

Enquire:
Ask questions with curiosity. Resist the urge to jump in and fix.

Attune:
Notice your impact. How do your tone, habits, and reactions shape the team?

Discern:
Choose what is wise, not just what feels urgent.

A Question to Reflect On

What would your team notice if you showed up
10% more grounded, intentional, or aligned with your values this week?

If this resonates, you do not have to figure it out alone.
